10/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to grant 2.53 million EUR in humanitarian aid to Yemen. This sum will go to help the most marginalised groups of the Yemenite population, especially those living in shanty towns on the edge of towns, street children, and refugees from the Horn of Africa. The Commissioner Louis Michel voiced his regrets that "the humanitarian needs of Yemen are generally overlooked by the international media and the donor community". He added: "As the capacities of the Yemenite State remain limited despite its best efforts in favour of development, it is the responsibility of the European Commission to help the poorest and most vulnerable people to live in decent conditions with dignity".
