25 determined to combat terrorist threat

Brussels, 17/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the European Council confirmed that it was firm in its resolve to combat the persistent terrorist threat, though a global and integrated approach which will strengthen cooperation not only at the internal but also at the international level. After a brief exchange of views, during which the High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, took stock of progress made in combating terrorism, followed by a short speech by Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero, the Twenty-Five insisted on the need to take additional measures against the financing of terrorism. Foreseen as far lengthier, the discussion was clearly shortened given the duration of discussions on Turkey. Speaking to the press, Mr Zapatero welcomed the "EU's commitment to make the fight against terrorism one of its main objectives". The European Council "has again stated its conviction that, in order to be effective in the long term, the Union's reaction toward terrorism must tackle the root causes of terrorism".
