THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/european council/turkey

17/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - It is "revealing" that the European Council is proposing 3 October 2005 for opening negotiation with Turkey, says Markus Feber (CSU) in a communication. This date "is intentionally placed after the French referendum on the Constitutional Treaty", says the MEP. With regard to the permanent restrictions on the free movement of persons, Mr Feber claims: in the long-term, the Court of Justice will not tolerate a lasting exception to the rules of the Treaty, and therefore "either the accession treaty with Turkey will not be valid or the restrictions will have to be lifted. The former Enlargement Commissioner Verheugen has already been forced to admit this to me during Parliamentary question time".
