Greens support UN report on "a more secure world" and calls on EU to discuss European seat at security council

Brussels, 06/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Raul Romeva, Spanish member of the Greens/EFA at the European Parliament gave his full support to the UN report published on 3 December, "A more Secure World: Our Shared Responsibility". The MEP called on EU institutions to take the report very seriously, which makes more than 100 recommendations on how to strengthen the role of the UN in international security. The MEP supported the idea of setting up a UN commission, "to identify which countries are at risk of violent conflict and to organise efforts and post-violence peacekeeping measures". His German colleague Frithjof Schmidt welcomed the emphasis on prevention: the fight against poverty, disease and environmental degradation.

The Greens/EFA point out that the report highlights deep-seated UN reform and considers that this ought to provide the occasion for the EU Member States to, "finally open discussions to provide the Union with a permanent seat on the Security Council replacing eventually the current permanent seats of national EU Member States" (France and the United Kingdom).
