Strasbourg, 24/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - Following its rapporteur, the Dutch Socialist Dorette Corbey, the European Parliament changed (codecision, first reading) the "revised packaging directive" to take account of the situation in the ten new Member States. On 11 February, hence before enlargement, Parliament and Council approved the modification of the packaging and packing waste directive from 1994, to include higher re-utilisation and recycling objectives for 31 December 2008. For the ten new Member States, the current proposal sets the date of 31 December 2012, but by going along with Ms Corbey, the plenary called for temporary derogations for them, not exceeding 2012 for Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and Cyprus, 2013 for Malta, 2014 for Poland and 2015 for Latvia. The rapporteur points out that the Commission will present a report on the implementation of the directive for 30 June 2005.
