ITER still held up over choice of site

Brussels, 09/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday in Vienna European Union negotiators again attempted to convince the Japanese to accept compensation for building an experimental thermo-nuclear fusion reactor (ITER) in Cadarache in France. The meeting had still not finished as we went to press. Accomplishing this international priority project for energy supply, which brings together six partners (EU, USA, Japan, Russia, China, south Korea), has been meeting problems for a number of months over the choice of the site. China and Russia support the EU and the French site of Cadarache, but the USA and Korea support the Rokkasho-Mura site in Japan. The Europeans are in a position of being able to begin building, in collaboration with their partners who want it, even without support from the Japanese or Americans.
