European Commission prepares proposed directive on intermodal safety

Le Bourget, 27/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is preparing a proposed directive on intermodal safety, which it plans to present during 2005. This was the announcement made on Wednesday by Christian Dupont, the main administrator within the Safety unit of DG Transport and Energy of the European Commission, at the 19th Euronaval exhibition, the international exhibition of naval material, which was held from 25 to 29 October in the Paris-Le Bourget Parc des Expositions. The aim of this proposal is to "make cargo safe in advance" transported by sea entering or leaving Community territory, explained Mr Dupont. It will therefore apply to intercommunity traffic and to boats from third countries transiting via Community territory, explained Mr Dupont. It will therefore apply to intra-community traffic and to traffic of ships from third countries and transiting through EU territory, he said. The proposal will also aim to favour the concept of a "single kiosk", because "it is easier for an operator to enter a port and complete all the administrative formalities in a single kiosk", instead of having to report to several ones, continued Mr Dupont, who told EUROPE that a study was being carried out to assess the impact of such a proposal.
