01/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - At his European Parliament hearing on 4 October new trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson, will have to convince MEPs on three main areas: his loyalty, his ability and his philosophy. This is effectively what Caroline Lucas affirmed in a press statement. She explained that Mr Mandelson will have to defen the Atlantic model (flexibility, free trade and aggressive opening up of the markets) or the European model (which puts more emphasis on social protection, trade regulation). His approach on GMOs will be crucial, as well as his attitude on the role of developing countries in the international trade system, said Ms Lucas. The latter intends to "grill" Mandelson on democratic transparency and democratic control of the Commission's trade policy.
