Galileo Euro-Med Cooperation Office is opened

Brussels, 27/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Transport Commissioner Loyola de Palacio and Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Ahmed Shafik inaugurated, on Sunday, the Galileo Euro-Med Cooperation Office. The office will aim to prepare countries of the region for possible participation in the Galileo programme and organise activities to promote satellite radio-navigation services in these countries. During the first information day, Ms de Palacio and Mr Shafik also launched the GNSS (Global Satellite Navigation System) project, which will allow training activities to be organised and the demonstration of radio-navigation services by satellite in the Mediterranean region. The project, Community sources say, will receive an allocation of EUR 4.5 million over three years, and will be managed by the Galileo Joint Undertaking.
