26/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 24 August, the European Commission formally adopted a decision on protective measures against bird flu in South Africa (see Europe of 12 August, p.3). The decision was published in Official Journal L275 of 25 August 2004. It suspends imports of ratites (ostriches) and pet birds (and their eggs, meat and meat products) from South Africa until 1 January 2005 onwards.
