Socialists will make life difficult for President Zaborzka, announces Martin Schulz

Brussels, 29/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - Martin Schulz, the President of the Socialist group in the European Parliament, is counting on the "determination of socialist women" members of the Committee on Women's Rights to "do the political work and harass the new President" of the Committee, the Slovak Anna Zaborska, known for her very conservative views on societal issues such as divorce and abortion. The German social-democrat made the point in a letter to Jean Quatremer, a correspondent for Libération, who entitled his article on Thursday on the election of the PPE-DE candidate to the presidency of the women's committee and that of the French socialist Pervenche Berès as President of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs: "A European post for the PS and principles swept away" (see EUROPE of 24 July, p.10 on the subject of the postponement of Anna Zaborska's election which led to that of the election of Pervenche Berès last Friday - the elections took place this week). Mr Schulz reminded the journalist that "as is habitual in the European Parliament and in many democracies, with the notable exception of France, distribution of posts is based on proportional distribution", the "d'Hondt rule". And he explains: "on this basis, the internal decision on candidates presented by the political groups (…) is entirely at the discretion of the groups. (…) As the President of the Socialist group, I can but note the choice made by the conservatives to undertake the presidency of the women's committee. (…) For our part, we are proud to have presented a woman for the presidency of the economic and monetary committee who is among the most experienced and qualified in this Parliament".
