26/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the Committee on Women's Rights at the European Parliament elected Anna Zaborska (Slovakia's Christian Democrat Movement) as its chairperson by 15 votes to 4 and 3 abstentions. The ALDE group called for and obtained the right to a secret ballot. German Social Democrat Lissy Gröner, who had managed to have the vote deferred last week by reproaching the candidate for having far right positions, said she would abstain. This opens the way to the election, next Wednesday, of French Socialist Pervenche Berès as chairperson for the economic and monetary committee, as foreseen in the agreements between political groups.
