Javier Solana on Middle East tour

Brussels, 19/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Union's High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, began a tour of the Middle East on Tuesday to discuss the situation in the region of Iraq. His trip will take him to Jordan, Egypt and Israel. On Tuesday, in Amman, Mr Solana will meet King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Ali Abul Ragheb and Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher. On Wednesday in Cairo, he is to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit. Also on Wednesday, he will attend an informal meeting of foreign ministers of Iraq's neighbouring countries (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey and Syria), held in the presence of their Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari. During the meeting, they will discuss the present and future situation in Iraq as well as the EU's political commitment in the region. On Thursday and Friday in Israel, the EU High Representative will meet Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.
