THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) european council/balkans

18/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Council has adopted conclusions on Serbia in which it stresses that presidential elections on 27 June are a "crucial moment" for Serbia, for the union that it forms with Montenegro and for the future development of its relations with the EU. It calls on Serb voters to exercise their democratic voting rights in order to take Serbia along the road toward European integration. The summit also welcomed the appointment of Danish Soeren Jessen Petersen as UN Special Representative in Kosovo. Mr Jessen Petersen, who was EU Special Representative in Macedonia, takes over from Finnish Harri Holkeri, who resigned for health reasons.
