24/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - Horst Köhler, former director of the International Monetary Fund, is the new president of the German Republic. CDU/CSU candidate was elected by the Bundesversammlung (1204 people, the 602 Bundestag members and representatives of civil society chosen by the Länder). He was elected on 23 May in the first round with 604 votes, just one vote more than the required majority. His rival, SPD candidate Gesine Schwan got 589 votes. As Secretary of State for Finance...
