24/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - According to Agence France Presse reporting from Warsaw, the interim Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka, during a meeting with the Lithuanian head of Government Algirdas Brazauskas, proposed creating a post of European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood. This Commissioner would be specifically in charge of monitoring the new neighbourhood policy launched by the European Commission, to the neighbouring countries to the south and east. A press release published after the meeting also indicates that Mr Belka and Mr Brazauskas want the European Union to "make an explicit statement on the future of Ukraine", calling upon it to "continue its efforts with a view to its accession to the EU".
