13/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The CDU MEP Werner Langen is satisfied that in its White Paper on services of general interest, the European Commission is not proposing a framework directive in this field, but regrets the fact that the Commission wants to keep this option open for the future (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.10). In a press release, the MEP stated that the White Paper raises more questions than it answers. However, he welcomed the fact that the Commission "finally recognises the role of the national, regional and local levels in making these services available". Local conditions are "totally different" from one Member State to the next, said Mr Langen.
