13/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Italian organisation Coldiretti welcomed in a press release the affirmation made in Killarney by the Irish Farm Minister, Joe Walsh, and European Commissioner for Agriculture Franz Fischler after the informal meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers. The affirmation is that a possible agreement at the WTO on reduction or abolition of support to European farm exports should also include protection of geographic indications in agriculture (see EUROPE of 12 May, p.12). Coldiretti evoked the specific situation of Italy, which has 136 products protected by a denomination of origin although it is considered that, in restaurants and supermarkets worldwide "one Italian menu out of three is false". Coldiretti again lists cooked meats (Parma ham, mortadella Milanesa produced in Chile, or Milano salami produced in Argentina), cheeses (Brazilian parmesan, Argentinean regianito, US grana padona), as well as vegetables (Treviso radicchio from Florida) and desserts (Wisconsin tiramisu) and digestive drinks (South African grappa and Argentinean marsala).
