Commission keeps positive decision on passenger data secret

Brussels, 12/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission is said to have adopted the decision confirming that the agreement with the US on the transfer of airline passengers will respect the European directive on the protection of data of a personal nature. However, it will try to keep this decision a secret until it has informed the European Parliament, which is opposed to the agreement (see EUROPE of 22 April, p.12). It is also waiting for the Council's formal adoption next Monday of the international EU/US agreement, which will take place without discussion. The Commission President, Romano Prodi, apparently had his doubts about the appropriateness of this decision, which was supported by Commissioners Patten, de Palacio and Bolkestein.
