Mr Verheugen welcomes new constitutional reforms, an "extra step" towards Copenhagen criteria

Brussels, 10/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Commissioner for Enlargement, Günter Verheugen, has welcomed the adoption of a raft of constitutional measures by the Turkish parliament on Friday. "This new package once again demonstrates Turkey's strong commitment to political reform, and its an extra step towards the Copenhagen political criteria", said the Commissioner. The new reforms affect many fields: the legal sector, relations between civil power and the military, press freedom and equal opportunities. "Some of the changes are particularly significant, such as the abolition of the State Security Courts and the withdrawal of representative of the national security council of the 'High Education Board'", said Mr Verheugen. Certain amendments relate directly to specific subjects, which were referred to in the Commission's latest regular report and in the conclusions of the European Council of December 2003. "As for the future, the Commission is appealing to Turkey to make sure that these reforms are effectively implemented", said Mr Verheugen. The Commission will take stock of the state of play in political reforms with the Turkish leaders at the forthcoming meeting of the EU/Turkey association Council, to take place on 18 May, at the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council.
