Greens' "Contract for Europe"

Brussels, 30/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 28 April in Brussels, the Greens launched a new phase in their campaign with a view to the European elections in June 2004. Monica Frassoni of Italy and Daniel Cohn-Bendit from Germany outlined an overview of the Greens' work in the European Parliament over the last five years and presented a "Contract for Europe" containing 44 concrete proposals for the next European Parliament. Among other things, the Contract calls for: - abolition of the Euratom Treaty before 2007, strict controls on GMOs, stronger measures against climate change, a reduction in goods haulage by road and the promotion of renewable energies. The contract also calls for more student exchanges in the EU, promotion of the European cinema industry and the establishment of an observatory for media pluralism and independence.
