THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/prodi commission

04/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - During the traditional annual press reception by the president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi regretted that unfortunately for him, it would be his last. In a brief speech, Prodi mentioned some of the events that had marked his presidency, including two successes which would in the beginning have been described as "missions impossible": the introduction of the Euro and the most recent enlargement of the EU. Prodi also mentioned the EU's policy on "new neighbours", noting that their press today was much more visible in Brussels. With regard to the European constitution, he commended that they could have had a constitution and they were still going to try.
