Brussels, 21/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - After a few moments of hesitation, the Polish government has appointed the minister for European affairs (and former representative of the Polish government at the Convention) as the first Polish European Commissioner. According to procedures, Mr Miller will still have to "consult" President Kwasnewski and the European affairs committee at the Polish parliament but that the decision would be entirely up to the government, which came out for Ms Huebner. In Brussels, there is no doubt that Mr Prodi would agree to the decision of the Polish minister's candidacy, for both her professional and European experience (in 1994 she was a Polish negotiator for Polish accession to the OECD and since 2001 she has been the minister in charge of European integration, overseeing Poland's accession negotiations to the EU). Ms Huebner's candidacy is also expected to resolve the problem of the "quotas for women" imposed by Mr Prodi. Following the nomination of Ms Kalneite (Latvia) and the very likely candidacy of Ms Grybauskaite (Lithuania), there will now be three women among the ten new Commissioners.
