Tunis, 20/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - European Enlargement Commissioner Günter Verheugen, also responsible for the policy of "neighbourliness", is to make a working visit to Tunisia on 21 and 22 January, thus beginning his information visits in the Mediterranean region. He is to go to Morocco early February and to Egypt in the spring. His visit to Tunis will be devoted to presenting this policy which aims to strengthen relations with all EU neighbouring states of the European continent or the Mediterranean rim, except those which are promised for accession. This approach covers all the subjects where the EU has common policies and cooperation, mainly the internal market to which the European Commission hopes to integrate all countries close-by. The Commission also plans, in this respect, to encourage the setting in place or the participation in infrastructure networks. It also plans to establish cooperation in areas such as the fight against terrorism, organised crime and illegal migration and to strengthen cooperation in education , science and culture. Commissioner Verheugen will hold meetings with members of the Tunisian government, as well as a meeting with business entrepreneurs, journalists and other representatives of the Tunisian society.
