Bertie Ahern opposes idea of two-tier Europe

Dublin, 23/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern, in an interview with AFP in Dublin, said that in a two-tier Europe with an avant-garde following a separate programme, he felt that cohesion and solidarity would suffer. On prospects for the IGC following the collapse of talks in Brussels, the Taoiseach said that if colleagues wished to make progress, the Irish Presidency was ready to pull out the stops, but warned that the Presidency could not make a breakthrough without a desire among the Member States to reach compromise. Ahern said Ireland would have to take account of verbal agreements reached at the IGC Summit in Brussels since everyone has to know where everyone is. He said no documents had circulated and what the Italian Presidency told the various Member States is not known.
