Brussels, 23/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Irish Presidency announces in its programme for the next six months that it will initiate discussion in the Council on the future financing of the EU post 2007 following receipt of the Commission Communication expected early in 2004 (probably at the end of January, Ed). It notes that 'discussions in the Council will prepare for the subsequent presentation by the Commission of its entire package of financial and legislative proposals'. The 'financial and budgetary arrangements underpinning the Union are a matter of fundamental importance not only for the Union but also for its citizens. The agreed Financial Perspectives reflect the Union's priorities and goals over a significant period and are the means through which the Union equips itself to meet the challenges ahead.'
