EP calls for new resources for EU Special Representative for Transcaucasia

Strasbourg, 19/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution on Georgia which was adopted on Thursday, the European Parliament calls upon the EU to define the means allowing it to support the new Georgian authorities, "by offering them the political, financial and technical assistance required to stabilise the situation", and to provide its Special Representative for Transcaucasia with "new resources allowing it to put into practice the EU's political objectives in this region (...), including that of guaranteeing Georgia's integrity and sovereignty". The EP calls upon the EU to speed up the implementation of the Tacis programmes for democracy for Georgia, and "to include issues pertinent to the three Transcaucasian peace processes on the agenda of the partnership" with Russia (in its resolution, the EP cites separatist activity in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the war in Chechnya and the "unresolved conflict" in High Karabakh). The EP also calls on Russia to respect the commitment it took at the OSCE summit of 1999 in Istanbul, to "immediately close their military bases" and "withdraw their troops for Georgia".
