19/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Parliament adopted the recommendation by British Conservative Robert Goodwill on the joint position of the Council amending the 1970 and 1980 directives on the extent of carbon dioxide emissions and the fuel consumption of N1 vehicles (the lightest commercial vehicles), (second reading, codecision). The Parliament approved the Council's common position as such, as the Council accepted the principle of families of vehicles adopted by the Parliament in first reading. The principle avoids individual examination of vehicles and concerns up to 4000 sub-types of the same vehicles (VW, LT, FIAT, DUCATO, etc.). This will allow manufacturers to apply these measures immediately and put an end to the uncertainty surrounding control procedures.
