Brussels, 02/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - On 1 December in Geneva, a delegation of MEPS took part in the launch of the Geneva Initiative for peace in the Middle East, lead by Graham Watson, President of the Parliament's Liberal group. 'Everybody in Geneva is willing for the two sides to make peace. When official channels appear blocked, only a concerted human effort can prevail. Now is the time for that effort,' commented Graham Watson after the ceremony, which saw the notable participation of Jimmy Carter, former United States President, who initiated the 1979 Camp David agreement, and Simon Veil, first elected President of the European Parliament. This initiative should 'provide guidance to the Israeli and Palestinian government' on the way to deliver the peace desired by a majority of their people, felt Mr Watson, while expressing the hope held by European parliamentarians to this unofficial initiative as a possible starting point for a historic reconciliation.
