Brussels, 02/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - A police exercise called Lucerna 03 (after the name of the hat worn by the Carabinieri) took place in Rome on 25 to 27 November to test the interoperability of integrated police units, as well as the procedures at headquarter level. More than 55 police officers from 22 EU member and acceding countries took part in the exercise, which took place at the headquarters of the Carabineri officer school, indicates a press release. The release adds that EU Council bodies have been working since last April on the interoperability of such units, which can be deployed in unstable regions and which have their own operational and logistical capability, enabling their to work in difficult security conditions. Lucerna mainly allowed for the testing, through deployment simulations, of the procedures required to deploy and redeploy such unites in operations, to ensure their control and command as well as to ensure logistical support and coordination with military components.
