Brussels, 12/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - Last week's adoption in Brussels of the President of the women's rights committee and equal opportunities, Anna Karamanou (PES, Greece) on "women in the new information society, saw the European Parliament requesting the Commission and Member States to elaborate policies to include women throughout the new Information Technology (ICT) domain. It also highlights the need to ensure that women are present in the "planning and decision making process on information society policies"; afford greater attention to women who risk being excluded from the information society (older women, unemployed, women on low incomes, immigrants, ethnic minorities and the disabled; apply gender equal opportunity policies on subjects that included vocational training, life long learning, conciliation between professional and private life etc; - use if structural funds, notably the Social Fund for encouraging ICT training. The EP is also requesting the Council and the Commission to: continue the application of policies and initiatives for integrating gender in a way that deals with under-representation of women in ICT; submit practical proposals for strategy and contribute to the inclusion of horizontal policies for sexual equality during the United Nations summit on the information society that will take place in Geneva next December.
