30/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The regular report which the European Commission will publish on 5 November on progress made by Turkey should be "positive and encouraging", European Commissioner Günter Verheugen told the press on Monday evening after his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gül. The Commission again called upon Turkey to commit more to finding a rapid resolution on the Cyprus chapter, stressing that this would help its own accession process. The Commissioner emphasised the importance of bringing in reforms. Speaking of the sentencing of former leaders of the Kurdish party Denhap for fraud during the legislative elections of November 2002, he hoped that this would not call into question the "political stability of the country" (yesterday's EUROPE, p.14).
