Brussels, 20/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Road freight cabotage on Community territory by EU hauliers (except Greece) was up 16% in 2001 compared to 2000, states Eurostat, the EC Statistical Office. The most active road cabotage freight hauliers (transport carried out by a haulier from one country on the territory of another country) come from Benelux, accounting for 52% of total cabotage in 2001. Due to their central position and the extent of their national market, France and Germany are the most targeted destinations for cabotage transport (followed by the United Kingdom). Nonetheless, the impact of cabotage on the internal transport market of these Member States is not significant as only 1.6% (France) and 1.1% (Germany) of their total internal transport is carried out by foreign hauliers. Foreign road hauliers are more present in Luxembourg and Belgium (two very "active" Member States with regards cabotage) since they make up 3.2% and 2.9% of total national transport.
