Brussels, 08/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Commissioners Diamantopoulou and Vitorino discussed with Portuguese authorities on Friday EU aid for the forest fires that have killed 15. They have called on the Portuguese government to present an estimate of the damages as soon as possible to allow for intervention form the European solidarity Funds and are envisaging other solutions. Structural funs and The CAP: means allocated to Portugal for rural and local development for reforestation, authorisation for farmers to leave production zones fallow etc. They have promise to very soon examine all national aid plans that seek to compensate companies suffering from damages caused by fires which in such a case allow for European legislation on State Aid.
