"European left's expectations"

Paris, 08/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - the European Left Presided by MEP, Pervenche Berès, the French Socialist, has published the results of a symposium held last April in Paris on the them of "Will the European Constitution reach our Expectations?". Pervenche Berès believes that given that the Convention has just finished its work, the conclusions of our symposium are still relevant". She also stressed that, "the Convention integrates some of our demands". Ms Berès noted that, "We can't consider this result as a foregone conclusion" and calls for their forces to remain "mobilised to make the Constitution a text that will allow the implementation of our Socialist values". Participants at the symposium, as well as Ms Berès, included the Secretary General of the European Left, Patrick Lefas, Vice President of the Party of European Socialists, Henri Nallet, former French Defence Ministers, Alain Richard and Paul Quilès and former Finance Minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former Secretary General of the ETUC, Emilio Gabaglio, MEP, Anne Van Lancker, Vice President of the SPD group at the Bundestag, Angelica Schwall Düren and European Commissioner for Trade Pascal Lamy. The latter pointed out that Europe was stalling at the moment in two main areas: economic governance and foreign security and defence policy. he believed that France and Germany were the "two natural candidates for differentiated integration". According to Lamy, "the Franco-German union" would of course be open to others seeking to join it but that it was the "only model that they had in stock". He also declared that it was the only way they could actually start integration and take it to where it needed to go in the areas of economic governance, the single currency and foreign and security policy.
