05/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Coldiretti has pointed out in a communiqué that following telephone canvassing on US television channel, ABC, 92% of those interviewed in the US want traces of GMOs in foodstuffs mentioned on the labels (a solution so far rejected by the US food industry, according to the Italian agricultural organisation). According to this survey, 55% of US consumers (62% of women - "the category that most often does the shopping") would refuse to by food whose labels indicated that GMOs were present. Coldiretti indicates that this attitude is "not that different from those of European consumers", according to a Eurobarometer survey. 70% of European consumes would not buy food containing GMOs even if they were cheaper and contained less fat, indicates the press statement.
