THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/commission

17/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - In La Libre Belgique, Francis Van de Woestyne envisages different scenarios for appointing the Belgian Commissioner to take over from Philippe Busquin next year. The agreement concluded between the parties in the context of forming the new Liberal-Socialist government under Guy Verhofstadt provides for the PS (French-speaking Socialist Party) to keep this post but it could also go to the VLD (Flemish Liberal Party) especially if Mr Verhofstadt decides to run for the presidency of the new Commission. If the French-speaking Socialists decide to hold on to the post, Mr Busquin may continue in his post, unless their president, Elio Di Rupo, wants to return to the Commission. Among other candidates, the article also mentions Flemish Liberal Karel De Gucht and Flemish Socialist Frank Vandenbroucke.
