Brussels, 11/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - In answer to questions on the law that was adopted recently in Ukraine to allow the secret services of that country to arrest journalists in order, among other things, to know what their information sources are, Diego de Ojeda, a spokesperson of the European Commission, stressed the impact that such a law would have on relations between the EU and Ukraine. "It is clear that freedom of the press is far from satisfactory" in Ukraine, he said, adding that, if this information proves true, "it will cause great concern on the part of the EU". Diego de Ojeda also recalled that, in the context of implementation of the EU policy in favour of its "new neighbours", which include Ukraine, "freedom of the press is a very important criteria" and "a condition for rapprochement with the EU".
