Commission to present reform proposals for Mediterranean products end September

Brussels, 11/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Franz Fischler announced to MEPs at the EP Committee on Agriculture on Wednesday that, end September, he will propose that the European Commission adopt proposals concerning reform of market organisations for olive oil, tobacco and cotton. The Commission should also adopt reports presenting different options for reform of the common market organisation for sugar. "The legislative texts will follow as quickly as possible", Mr Fischler affirmed. Furthermore, the Commissioner pointed out that the Commission would organise on 13 and 14 November in Salzburg a European conference on the theme of developing rural areas in the enlarged Union. The conference "follows on from the Commission's successful 1996 conference in Cork, as a result of which we were able to integrate the second pillar of the CAP in the Agenda 2000 reform package", Mr Fischler recalled. The latter specified that the Salzburg conference will be held on the eve of the publication of the third report on cohesion. According to Mr Fischler, the debate will "give us the chance to take an indepth look at our experience so far of the second pillar, and to discuss the principles for the next generation of programmes for the 2007-13 programming period".
