Brussels, 06/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the Greek Presidency sharply criticised the fact that Cuba had broken the moratorium on the death penalty and called for all political prisoners to be released immediately and ensure that they do not suffer needlessly and " that they are not subject to inhumane treatment". A declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU also indicated that the Union had decided by unanimity to: - limit High Level Government visits in a bilateral framework; - reduce participation by Member States in cultural events; - invite Cuban dissidents to ceremonies organised for national festivities; - begin a re-assessment of the common position on Cuba. On this last point, a Commission spokesman indicated on Friday that "discussions would soon take place", and that development aid would continue (projects linked to civil society economic reforms and the environment) but that food aid would disappear insofar as it was no longer necessary.
