02/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission on Monday proposed bringing into the EU harmonised rules for the management of waste coming from the mining industry, in order to prevent water and soil pollution. The proposed directive, which covers all sectors of the mining industry, hopes to draw lessons from the Baia Mare accident in Romania, where a leak in a gold mine in July 2000 had caused cyanide spillage into the Danube and Tisza rivers. Europe will come back on this proposal.
