Most British are against the euro

Brussels, 15/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - Two opinion polls appeared in the right-wing conservative British press on Thursday showing that public opinion in the United Kingdom is for the most part opposed to Britain's entry into the euro zone, and to strengthened European Union powers. According to the poll carried out by The Daily Telegraph, the government would experience a tremendous failure if it organised a referendum at the present time on bringing in the euro (60% say they would vote against single currency, and 30% would vote in favour). Most of those taking part in the survey call for consultation to be organised before adopting the new EU Treaty. The results of another poll published by The Sun show that 81% of those questioned know nothing about the Convention on the Future of Europe and that 84% of them demand a referendum before ratifying a new treaty.
