Strasbourg, 11/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Adopting a resolution of its Development Committee, the European Parliament has condemned harassment of Yannick Bigah, President of ACAT (Action des Chrétiens pour l'Abolition de la Torture) following information that ACAT submitted to the EP on the human rights situation in Togo. The EP is calling on the Togolese authorities to make a public statement guaranteeing the safety of members of ACAT-Togo and other human rights associations and to put a stop to harassment of them. It is calling on the European Commission to support the establishment of instruments to protect human rights activists (by, for example, establishing a special rapporteur on the issue) within the relevant regional bodies, such as the African Human Rights Committee.
