Commission publishes updated set of structural indicators with view to Summit on 21 March

Brussels, 11/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - It was in underlining the progress still to be made, as well as the "uncertainties" linked to developments in the international situation, that Gerassimos Thomas, spokesperson for European Commissioner Pedro Solbes, presented the updated set of structural indicators on Wednesday, to be submitted to the Heads of State and Government at the Spring European Council on 21 March. For the first time, these indicators, which allow progress made on the road to economic, social and environmental renewal as defined in Lisbon to be measured, incorporate data relating to the future Member States and candidate countries. They reflect the situation on 17 February 2003 and concern the general economic environment (growth, productivity, inflation, public debt, employment, etc.), innovation and research (access to the Internet, number of people qualified in science and technology, patents deposited, etc.), economic reform (price of telecommunications, gas, electricity, public procurement, State aid, etc.), social cohesion (rate of poverty risk, dispersion of regional employment rates, rate of long-term unemployment, etc.) and the environment (greenhouse gas emissions, transport, urban air quality, waste, share of renewable energy, and protection of natural resources).
