Copenhagen, 12/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan called upon the European Council President on Wednesday to make the necessary organisation available in Copenhagen for conducting negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Mr Rasmussen announced to the press on Wednesday evening. He said negotiations would be held in Copenhagen over coming days in parallel to the European summit. It was expected that the UN would seek to bring Cypriots from both sides together in order to achieve an agreement on reunification of the island. Mr Rasmusssen said he had not spoken to Cypriot leaders recently because talks are conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. Mr Rasmussen insisted on the fact that these negotiations and Cyprus' EU membership are "directly linked". "The Cypriot question will not break enlargement", he repeated. He admitted that two draft texts were in circulation on the arrangements for Cyprus' membership to the EU, one for a united island, and the other for an island that is still divided.
