13/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with Reuters, President Prodi declared that the Euro should be headed by a genuine "authority" in charge of co-ordinating economic policies of its Member States and that the European Commission was the best placed to fulfil this role. The President of the Commission also explained that they should stick to the Stability Pact and apply the rules just like they have done up till now. Mr Prodi also added that (the form of the pact) was "stupid" but that the spirit was "intelligent" and that he wanted the system to be accompanied by other rules on economic policy co-ordination. According to Mr Prodi, another authority should accompany the European Central Bank in co-ordinating economic policies in order to ensure that the pact is respected by Member States and that the Commission is the natural candidate for this role. The Commission President explained, however, that rules had to be made in this connection, not by the Commission but by the Council.
