Brussels, 13/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission forwarded to the Council a detailed proposal of the arrangements of the EU/Morocco agreement on the regime for importing Moroccan tomatoes into the EU. The agreement covers the harvesting year from 1 October 2002 to 31d May 2003 and establishes provisions identical to those of the previous harvesting period. Thus, Morocco undertakes not to let its exports exceed 168 757 tonnes. Furthermore, the tariff quota for April and May 2003 (by way of 12 081 tonnes) will only be open if imports of Moroccan tomatoes to the EU do not exceed 156 676 tonnes between 1 October 2002 and 30d March 2003. The main aim of this temporary agreement (pending the conclusion of negotiations on amending the reciprocal concessions of the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement) is to allow continuation of the traditional tomato trade flow from Morocco while preventing EU markets from being disrupted.
