15/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Union of Christian-Democrat Workers elected to its presidency, at its recent general assembly, Elmar Brok (CDU). He replaces Belgium's Luc Delanghe (ACW) who becomes honorary president. The posts of vice-president and secretary general were respectively allocated to Belgium's Guido Dumont and Tom De Saegher. In his inaugural speech, Elmar Brok placed emphasis on the importance of Social Europe. "The ability to interest European citizens, the majority of whom are workers, in the changes facing Europe essentially depends on the assurances they are given that we shall not tinker with the rights they have gained", commented Brok.
