Brussels, 14/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Monday in Paris, President Chirac and Chancellor Schröder, accompanied by their Foreign Affairs Ministers, had a working lunch focusing on developments in Iraq and preparation of the European Council in Brussels. If there is no rapprochement in their points of view, particularly on funding and enlargement, a meeting counld be arranged for them a week before the summit in Germany (a compromise that could see France agreeing to a reduction in direct agriculture payments as from 2007 if Germany agrees to them being kept until this date). A spokesperson from the German government indicated that on institutional issues, Mr Schröder would not be hostile to the idea of a European President elected by Heads of State and Governments, but stressed that this would not be in contradiction with the strengthening of the President of the European Commission (which is what the Chancellor wants). According to Auswärtiges Amt, the German position on this issue (Peter Glotz argued for it at the Convention) has not changed.
