Brussels, 25/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The meeting between the Union's ministerial troika and Indonesia, held in Copenhagen on Tuesday, "confirmed the need and relevance of close collaboration" between Brussels and Jakarta, declared the head of Danish diplomacy, Per Stig Moller. "It is clear that there are a certain number of areas where it is in our common interest to pursue a close dialogue and more intense collaboration", said the President of the EU Council, citing political dialogue, trade co-operation and humanitarian aid. Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda undertook an overview of the situation in his country, stressing its attachment to democratisation, including preparations for the direct election of the Indonesian President in 2004. His Danish counterpart, who led the European delegation (Danish Presidency, Commission, Council and Greece - which takes over the presidency in the first half of 2003) for his part placed emphasis on the political situation. He urged Jakarta to "seek a peaceful solution to the problems of provinces where trouble reigns" and stressed "the importance of improving the living conditions of the population of these regions, as well as the EU's will to contribute". The Europeans also "clearly" expressed their concern as to the way "the Tribunal for human rights in East Timor has functioned so far", as well as their wish to see this "tribunal respect international standards".
